About Singapore Art Museum & 8Q

The Singapore Art Museum, officially opened in 20th January 1996 by our Senior Minister, Mr Goh Chok Tong, displays the history of art in Singapore as well as South-East-Asian contemporary art pieces and practices. The building was a 19th Century mission school (St. Joseph’s Institution) thus making it look extremely ‘Victorian’ and lets you feel like royalty!

SAM has relationships with international museums like Louvre Museum (France), Guggenheim Museum (New York), Shanghai Art Museum, Seoul National University Museum of Art, and many more, and they have met up once in a while to discuss on how to further diversify the arts culture and to share new ideas. Thus, you will definitely not be bored once you step in to the museum because the building’s façade as well as the paintings will fill you with curiosity, nostalgia and leaves you jaw-dropping!

In the lobby, you would see the ‘scent gallery’. It shows the different kinds of smells people use in the past and there are free-sniffs too! Further into the museum, you will see about 13 state-of-the-art galleries, from level one all the way to level three, full of exquisite pieces of art, all for your visual pleasure!

Some galleries are currently facing upgradation so there is definitely more to expect!

With a wide range from paintings and sculptures to photographs and multimedia installations, you can absolutely be blown away by over 7000 works of art! (where artists, just to name a few would be Frank Stella and Roy Lichtenstein, experiment with new art materials and technologies).

If time permits, be sure to head over to 8Q Museum. It’s another smaller museum, affiliated to SAM, and has only 8 galleries to view. But! These 8 galleries only holds the best and most interesting of works by artists such as Donna Ong, Jason Wee, Jahan Loh and many more! This is definitely will be an eye-opener and not to be missed!
