About Esplanade
Singapore’s architectural icon, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay was opened on 12 October 2002. Our island now has one of the world’s biggest and busiest arts’ centre which was developed at a cost of SGD 600 million.
The Esplanade is located alongside Marina Bay near the mouth of the Singapore River, in the central region of Singapore. In the past year, Esplanade has welcomed over seven million visitors and presented more than 1,800 performances. Some of the famous performances include Maksim: Concert Classique, The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge etc.
Its unique architectural design has been said to be similar to that of a durian (a tropical fruit) or the eyes of a fly. Thus many Singaporeans refer to the esplanade as “The Durian”. As a distinct landmark of Singapore, the esplanade has been compared with Australia's Sydney Opera House.
The Esplanade showcases Singapore’s artsy, creative side and is currently Singapore’s largest performing arts venue. The Esplanade was built such that it would be able to host a wide variety of programmes and concerts. These line-ups range from music concerts to dance, theatre and visual arts, with a special emphasis on Asian culture. Its two main venues which are both visually and acoustically spectacular are the 1,600-seat Concert Hall and the 2,000-seat theatre. The 2,000 seat theatre is complete with the latest stage technology and a full-size orchestra pit.
Other facilities also include an open-air amphitheatre, practice studios and rehearsal rooms which serve as smaller performance venues, outdoor spaces for informal performances. In addition, a 9,800 sqm Esplanade Mall which offers an exciting mix of retail, lifestyle and entertainment outlets over three levels was also built to cater to the public.
One need not visit the esplanade just to attend concerts. Be it for shopping, food, recreation or leisure, the esplanade caters to one and all. One activity that you can look forward to is catching the regular free performances outside the buildings, which are advertised either on the theatre's website or in the monthly "What's On" guide.
