About Chinatown Heritage Centre

Located in Pagoda Street in the heartland for all Chinese, the Chinatown Heritage Centre is a definite must-see. It aims to create awareness to people, through displays of trials and tribulations, via 15 mini galleries. These galleries explain in detail the hardships that Singaporeans in the 40s and 50s have gone through and how they struggled but managed to pull through, as well as the standard of living in Singapore at that point in time. The hard life of the people resulted in many of them seeking solace in the four evils – Opium Smoking, Prostitution, Gambling and Secret Societies.

Each level of the centre displays different time frames of the history of Singapore. This allows you to trace the lives of the early residents as their past unravels through short video clips and wax figurines. One even gets the chance to see the cubicle-like space in which each resident sleeps in the past. This replica has been skillfully re-created based on the recollections of its previous occupants. Not only that, but toilets, kitchens, study rooms, as well as the local Chinese coffee shops are recreated. These exhibits are so real that it is as though one is taking a step back to the past and experiencing them first hand!

The visit to the heritage center would definitely be an eye-opening and fruitful experience for all. If one happens to be in Chinatown, do make the effort to head down to the heritage centre, it will definitely be worth your money.
